Education Friday: Conjuctions

Love "Conjunction Junction". Definitely a favorite. This also concludes Grammar Rock. I'm not sure what to do next. Any thoughts?

You better listen to Ann

Madame posted about Ann Richards' passing yesterday, and I agree with her. Ann Richards was one of a vanishing breed of pragmatic progressives who is able to both get elected and get programs and policy across that improve people's lives. Bernie Sanders is perhaps the only living counterpart that I can think of (and that's not to dis Al Gore or Russ Feingold). In my post at Neural Gourmet I included Ann Richard's Keynote Address to the 1988 Democratic Convention in Atlanta, Georgia which is how I first came to be aware of this remarkable woman and thought all our Shithead friends would want to hear it too. You can read it at American Rhetoric (and download the MP3) or listen to it here. Seriously, give it a listen. I know you're going to enjoy it.

Well, crap

Ann Richards has died"

I'll admit, I didn't know that much about her, but I definitely respected her, and that doesn't happen too much with me and politicians. Even my staunchly republican family members liked her.

Grand theft pop

I post this here only for purposes of informing my fellow Shitheads about the kinds of treacherous tricks that unscrupulous individuals will pull just to rob an honest buck from the hard working vending machine owners. No Shithead would ever sink to this level of depravity. Oh no they wouldn't.

Home entertainment of the future

Imagine if you live 500 years in the future and you invent a time machine and for some unknown reason you set the controls for 1972 where you discover an ancient electronic game that can only be best enjoyed after a hard night of drinking. Knowing that there's a huge retro-drunken gaming craze going on in your time you excitedly set the controls to return to the future so you can get rich by reintroducing a modernized holographic version of this game to the world. Except in your excitement you accidentally set the controls for 2006 and then break the control lever (because you've been out drinking all night, remember?). Stuck in 2006 without time travel or holographic technology you settle for making this pale imitation instead. You die an embittered and lonely man.

Actually this is a fun time killer.

Chill to the warp core

I think this should be the official sound of Braindead Shithead. Ahhh very relaxing.

The worst dressed superheroes of all time

In this 2003 feature from retroCrush, Mr. Blackwell meets Stan Lee. You know that the second hardest thing to do in creating a new comic, right after coming up with an original superpower, is dressing the nascent hero appropriately. Let's just say there are a lot of failures.

Brand awareness through the looking glass

This is old but maybe some of you Shitheads haven't seen it yet. If Microsoft designed the Apple iPod packaging. It's funny because it's true.

I Are Read

Montag's BookshelfMercifully stopping short of posting me-in-my-underwear pics, this is how revealing I'll ever get on Braindead Shithead. I may regret doing this, but here is my bookshelf.

Click the picture for a large, painfully revealing version of the image. You should be able to read the titles if you so desire. If you can't read something, or have questions I'll answer the best I can.

Roughly: the left side is fiction (except for the text books, and parts of the "to read" pile,) and the right is non-fiction.

Color code:

Gray = I have never purchased a Stephen King book, but have read a few. Coming from the same state as the author, I guess makes his stuff a good gift.

Royal Blue = My favorites.

Olive Green = My "to read" stack. I get stressed looking at it and thinking how little time there is in the day.

Red = On loan from my Dad.

Magenta = Home to my camera.

Cyan = B-O-R-I-N-G.

Mint Green = There's a Bible lurking in the shadows down there.

Books not shown which I am currently reading are:

  • Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon on the recommendation of my blog cohort, and most trusted advisor, Fehlleistungen;

  • Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire by (Journey vocalist?!) Steve Perry, on the recommendation of a drinking buddy, and fellow S.W. Shithead (yes I am a nerd. But this one is for bathroom reading);

  • The Sorting Machine Revisited: National Educational Policy Since 1945 by Joel H. Spring, (are you still awake?);

  • The Republican War on Science by Chris Mooney.

My progress on all four fronts has been sporadic at best lately. Probably because I find it so easy to burn an hour here-and-there composing posts like this.

Holy fucking balls! The new Bond looks good!

The official Casino Royale trailer has hit the internet and it looks BAD ASS!!! I am slightly stoked for this stripped down, reckless-as-hell Bond, if you couldn't tell. According to a spy in London, things seem well on track. An exclusive screening went extremely well, with the chief complaint from the reviewer being too much emphasis on developing the central love story. TOO MUCH? This sounds freakin' wonderful.

Anyway, November 17 can't come soon enough for me.

The neuroses of puppets

Jiří Trnka - The Hands

I found this delightful short film over at the wonderful little sharity blog Prog Not Frog. I could waste your time inadequately describing it, but I'll let nahavanda do that instead.

"Jiří Trnka (24 February 1912 Plzeň - 30 December 1969 Prague) was Czech puppet maker, illustrator, motion-picture animator and film director, renowned for his puppet animations.

He graduated from Prague School of Arts and Crafts. He created a puppet theater in 1936. This group was dissolved when World War II began, and he instead designed stage sets and illustrated books for children throughout the war. After the war ended, Trnka established an animation unit at the Prague film studio. Trnka soon became internationally recognized as the world's greatest puppet animator in the traditional Czech method, and he won several film festival awards. One animator called him "the Walt Disney of the East". He won an award at the Cannes Festival in 1946, just one year after he began working in film. His films were mostly made for an adult audience. Beginning in 1948, the communist Czech government began to subsidize his work, although this did not seem to affect the message or style of his work. He also created animated cartoons. He wrote the scripts for most of his own films. He died of heart trouble in 1969."

Anyway, this 40+ year old film seems a bit dated in this age of ultra-realistic CGI so it might be hard to appreciate the technical achievement represented. Hopefully you don't let that get in the way of enjoying it though. This is truly a lost treasure.
