Mmm...fingers

In case you missed it, some lady thinks she found a finger in her Subway sandwich. Initially, I thought this was pretty gross, but my discomfort was quickly eased by Subway manager, Anita Munoz.
“It looked like a thick piece of fat,” she told The Fresno Bee. “It doesn't look anything human to me.”
Thanks, Anita. That makes me feel so much better.

The Mix v23.0

I love, love, love the first song of this Mix. It's from the upcoming solo effort by Pulp frontman, Jarvis Cocker. Jarvis, if by some quirk of fate you happen to read this blog, please hear my plea: release "Fat Children" as a single!!! Don't listen to the industry assholes who tell you it's "too English." Just release it. Trust me, the Yanks will eat it up with a spoon. Repeat after me, "Fat children took my life. Fat children took my life..."

Several good alt rockers, including Zoe, The Fratellis, The Fever, and The Killers. Okay, I'm a little late to hit The Killers's bandwagon, but this really is an exceptional record. I tried to pick a track you won't hear on the radio.

The track by David Bazan is brash and refreshing in a way neither Neil Young nor Pearl Jam can afford to be. I make that comparison because both Young and Pearl Jam made political albums this year. While Bazan hits several political topics, I wouldn't call it a "political" album. Still, the song "Backwoods Nation" depicts America much more accurately than Vedder or Young's liberal underpinnings will allow. Truly scathing stuff in this song.

After all the alt rockers, we need something a little more laid back from Wise In Time. Do you like noise? I've got some noise for you. Check out Non's selection. Keep a sense of humor while listening to Infected Brain's "I Will Kill You." There's something inspired about the Cookie Monster saying "I suffocate your soul!" We wrap up with some grungy goodness from Flipper.

Mix time: 43 minutes

Yet another reason to tease Arizona

Here we go! Yet another reason to feel superior-depending on where you live.
The ranking of the smartest states.
The above link goes to the story, but really, who gives a shit about that, right?
We need to know rankings. RANKINGS!!!

So, here it is.
Feeding your superiority complex.

Chart!

(I tried to steal the graphic, but got shot down.
Poor JR and me-we live in number 33. Though, it is one better than Ohio, where I was born. And Alaska, where I grew up? Number 46. Proving once again that Alaska blows.

And You Thought Jesus Camp Was Disturbing

Actually, I haven't seen Jesus Camp yet, but even from what I've heard, I wonder if it might not be rivaled in scariness by the anecdote at the top of this New York Times article:
TOPEKA, Kan., Oct. 12 -- Grace Mosier lives with her mom and dad, goes to birthday parties, takes ballet classes and is just like a lot of other 6-year-old girls. Except that she happens to be obsessed with Dick Cheney.

"I really, really like him," says Grace, who can tell you what state the vice president was born in (Nebraska), where he went to grade school (College View, in Lincoln) and the names of his dogs (Dave and Jackson). She gets her fix of Cheney fun-facts by visiting the White House Web site for children. It says there that his favorite teacher was Miss Duffield and that he used to run a company called Halliburton.

So when Mr. Cheney came to town Thursday, Grace was at Forbes Field, holding a little American flag and a sign that said, "Welcome, Mr. Vice President, pet Dave and Jackson for me." She watched him get off Air Force Two, step into a car and speed off to a fund-raiser.

"Like a rock star coming to town," says Dene Mosier, Grace's mother. And while Mr. Cheney might be an unusual object for a 6-year-old's fixation, it is probably less unusual here, in the heart of Cheney Country.

Nomi-mania!

Get 'em while you can because as with anything remotely good the ton of great Klaus Nomi vids up at Gootube will disappear soon. And if you don't know who Klaus Nomi is, what the hell, were you in a coma for the early 1980s, or worse, into disco? Now, Nomi was not exactly my cup of tea but no one can deny the man was a genius and what a performer! Here's just two vids, the famous Total Eclipse from the cult film Urgh! A Music War and Lightning Strikes (I think Dennis DeYoung stole his Mr. Roboto moves from Nomi), but believe me -- you will want to partake in the virtual Nomi-thon at the Gootube.

On edit: The Lost Turntable (an amazing mp3 blog) has (surprise, surprise) mp3s of the soundtrack of Urgh! A Music War available.

Abandon In Place

When Congress told NASA to scrap the Apollo program some 3 moon missions sooner than scheduled, and no more mighty Saturn Vs were built, NASA simply walked away from the towering Launch Complex 39-A at Cape Canaveral (now Kennedy Space Center) leaving it to rust and decay for years. The sign they bolted to the side of the launch tower read simply “Abandon In Place”.

This is apparently a common method of dealing with business failure in Japan where the ghostly hulks of abandoned amusement parks litter the countryside and Swiftian-sized Gullivers lie at Fuji’s base. There’s 4 pages of this stuff: Page 1, Page 2, Page 3, Page 4.

And if you’re in the mood for more industrial scale decay, Defunctparks.com features many snapshots of parks in their heyday alongside their current state of rot. Nor should you miss Suzy Poling’s site. Poling, an Oakland photographer, has a great photo series of an abandoned theme park called Hidden Village. She also features a spread of old delapidated theatres: Palace of Mold.

Bond at Abu Ghraib?

Actually, it's a leaked photo from the torture sequence in Casino Royale. Yep, Bond is nekid! That means the infamous 'carpet beater' will, indeed, make an appearance. Ouch!

Barely a month to go until CR. I can hardly wait!
