Madame smacked me with this link from Snarkywood. It's all about The Hoff, and man will you be sorry! The pictures, most of which were new to me, reach new levels of Hoffmania. Check it out.

Ted Stevens made cool

Can't get enough of Ted Stevens's "The Internet is a series of tubes" comment? Check out this great mashup of Mr. Stevens and Pulsedriver over at YTMND. Classic. And here is the great riff by Jon Stewart on The Daily Show.

Do you miss MST3K?

Well of course you do! Who doesn't? While the show lost steam after years of writer/actor defections and its 12 television network changes, it was still funny throughout its entire 50 year reign of terror. Now, one of the creators, Michael J. Nelson (who played "Mike" for 35 years on the original MST3K), has started a website to carry on the tradition.

Riff Trax offers you the opportunity to buy commentary tracks for such cinematic turds as Road House, Star Trek V, and The Fifth Element. I think it's something like $2. You download the track and sync it up to a DVD of the movie. Sounds pretty simple, if not a little strange.

Here's a sample from Road House. The problem, obviously, is that Road House needs no commentary to make it more ridiculous. It's perfect, much like a well-brewed fart or a zit that's ready to pop. Still, it's good to hear Mike's take on things.

I'm not sure if I will actually spend money on these things, but I appreciate the effort and the sentiment that went into making them. I suppose you could read this as a cynical attempt to milk the MST3K phenomenon for more money. I choose to view it as a continuation of one of the purest, most elegant ideas ever brought to television. Damn, that was a good show.

J-Pop Sunday

Well gang, I've got nothing this week. Yep, I had a whole week to prepare and I blew it. Not like that's going to stop me though. As I previously commented, as strange as it might seem and despite being a visual medium, music is what got me hooked on anime in the first place. And since I put together that list of essential anime in the hopes of getting someone else hooked, why not just do an entire J-Pop Sunday of music from some of my favorite anime? And that's what you're getting.

This is a collection of opening/closing credits, AMVs (fan created Anime Music Videos), and trailers. There's no particular order to these tunes, just some great music. And while there's one or two tunes that I might not listen to normally, they're associated with pleasant memories so they're here anyway. So skip around, sample, and enjoy.

Set List: Cowboy Bebop opening (Tank! by Yoko Kano and Seatbelts), Outlaw Star opening (Through the Night), Gundam Wing opening (Just Communication! by Two-Mix), Cowboy Bebop ending (The Real Folk Blues by Mai Yamane), Furi Kuri AMV (Ride On Shooting Star by the pillows), Serial Experiments Lain opening (Duvet by BOA), Tenchi Muyo 2nd OAV opening (I'm A Pioneer by ?), Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away AMV (Always With Me by Youmi Kimura and Wakako Kaku), Ghost In The Shell: Innocence Japanese trailer (Follow Me by Kimiko Itoh), Key the Metal Idol opening (In The Night by Kijima Sario), Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 opening (Y'Know by Sage Koizumi and Sudou Akira), Great Teacher Onizuka 1st opening (Driver's High by L'Arc-en-Ciel).

Sunday in the Mix v18.0

Some good stuff this week, including something from one of my favorite albums of the year so far. Good alt rockers and funky lounge stuff abound!

Alt rockers The Format, Asobi Seksu, and Rock Kills Kid (I like a band that knows how to build a good bridge!) start things off. For some reason, the album Citrus by Asobi Seksu hasn't exploded yet. In fact, judging by the reviews at Amazon, people are fairly mixed on its quality. No doubts here. I love it! I dig the lush, poppy arrangements and syncopated guitar noodling. And how can you not like a singer that sings in both English and Japanese? You might really dig this one, TNG (If you've already posted something about Asobi Seksu, please allow me to apologize). Last year's aggro outfit City Of God rounds out a boisterous top of The Mix.

Now we slip into something different.

Joan As A Police Woman is somehow soulful and playful at the same time. Shearwater and Longcut both start as slow rockers, but Shearwater sizzles to its conclusion, while Longcut erupts into chaos.

Senor Coconut and His Orchestra and Barry Adamson provide a one-two punch of pure lounge funkiness. Next comes another cut from the wonderful "Wild Wild World Of Mondo Movie Music." That leads to an oldie that isn't so old, Depeche Mode's "Never Let Me Down Again." Was just in the mood for some DM, I guess.

Hey, the Rapidshare monster link is back! Enjoy!
