What you say?

Well, since Madame posted the creatively translated Zero Wing intro, we must have an obligatory Engrish.com posting. Nothing points out the incompatibilities between English and Japanese quite like Engrish.

Comments:
I love the engrish stuff. I know it's offensive, but I just can't help myself.

I don't get it though. I spoken with a lot of Japanese speakers in English and their English is no where near this bad, and they rarely trip up on idioms. Why are their commercial products so different? Are translators just paid really badly in Japan so Japanese businesses have a hard time hiring good translators? Or has the Engrish itself become part of hip popular culture and they're intentionally putting out products with bad translations?

I think it might be a product of advertising slogans being so puerile. The translators have to determine the English equivalent of the "hip" Japanese advertising slogan. So the Japanese slogan might be, "Let our jeans hug your hips!" and the English translation becomes "Your crotch feels these jeans good!" Just speculating here.

The movie title translations are the best, though. I remember Mike Myers talking about translating "Wayne's World" into Japanese. The title "Wayne's World" was meaningless to the Japanese, so it morphed into "The Kids Are Trying Hard" or something like that. Too funny.

"Your crotch feels these jeans good!" Sounds like the promise of the threat of the evil pair of underwear hiding in every package of undies I buy. You know, that one piece of underwear that while visibly no different from all the other pieces of undies you own yet somehow manages to never have enough material in the crotch, overtight elastic and is almost sure to be giving you a wedgie by 10AM.

Dude, you should go commando! Of course, 'free-balling' brings an entirely new set of hazards.
