Very cool. If you look at the README file included with the source code, you'll see that HP programmers actually included a PLAYTUNE command in the Scanner Control Language (SCL). This is why geeks rule!

Playing music with peripheral devices has a long history. We used to do it with dot matrix printers, and my mentor did it with daisy wheel printers. There were all kinds of games that you could play. One favorite was crashing the mainframe by causing the big washing machine sized disk drives to perform calculated head seeks such that the angular momentum would add up and the drive would "walk" its' way across the room until it pulled its' power cord out of the wall, bringing the whole system to a halt. Such fun!
