I've Never Done One of these "Meme" Thingys

Via: Mr Furious

You know you are about to get dumped on a desert island. There will be a complete home entertainment center -- solar-powered? Made of coconuts ala the Professor? 5:1 surround? -- Doesn't matter. It works, and you have to select the following things to keep you going the rest of your days.

Album
Book
Film
Complete television series

What'll it be?

Ok, here I go. [Click images to go see.]

Album:
Aphex Twin
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Volume II
It's like fingernails across a chalkboard for some. I find the repetition soothing.

Book:
My favorite book is Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon, but that's not the one I'd take. I'll go with this one instead:
Count of Monte Cristo
Alexandre Dumas - The Count of Monte Cristo
And I'd chuckle every time I picked it up; about that scene in Shawshank Redemption where the guy pronounces the author's name as Dumb-ass. It's a good thick book, a great story, and possibly some practical information in there.

Film:
Brazil
Terry Gilliam - Brazil
It's like fingernails across a chalkboard for some [cough]Mrs. Montag[/cough] but it's my favorite film. It presents a view of the world that makes desert island living seem idyllic.

Complete television series:
Dark Angel
James Cameron, Charles H. Eglee, Jessica Alba - Dark Angel
This might be an ill-advised choice because it only lasted two seasons, and the second season sucked. But the first season was great, and it would be useful for... uh... "other" reasons, as well. And again, a view of the world to make trapped-on-a-desert-island feel like paradise.

All you Shitheads can consider yourselves "tagged."

Comments:
Dude, I love "Brazil". I'm a total Terry Gilliam whore.
In the best possible way, of course.
I even like Aphex Twin.

Hmmm, what would I bring...
Complete Television Series-Law and Order.
There's a definite plus in that they're on their like 97th (okay, I think it's actually 14th) season, with no signs of stopping, but man, I love this show. An hour of one story, with continuing characters, but no soap opera bits, like having the characters fall in and out of love every third episode.

Movie-Pink Flamingos. The filthiest people alive never get old. And that narration!

Book-The Rapture of Canaan, by Sheri Reynolds. About a 15 year old girl in a closed religious sect in the south who gets pregnant by her "prayer partner", who then kills himself. Nobody believes she's having the baby of Jesus until the baby's born.

Music. Hmm, this is tough. Real tough. I think, though, I've got to go with Frank Black's self-titled album. I've bought like three different copies of it, love it to death, and can still sing most everything word for word, though I haven't heard it at all in a couple years. (time to replace the CD. AGAIN.)

This is deceptively tough. I mean, on the surface it looks like a "select your favorite so-and-so" meme, but you have the whole desert island factor. What you like most might not be good desert island material. Hmmm.

Music: Shit. You'd want something that took you through the complete emotional spectrum, but left you happy at the end. Hmmm. I think I would have to go with "That's What I Call Sweet Music." It's a collection of Jazz and Swing songs from the 1920's, compiled by the one and only R. Crumb's from his 78 record collection. Holy shit, is it awesome. Well worth the money I paid on eBay to get it. It's like musical lithium.

Book: This one is easier. "Flannery O'Connor : Collected Works." It includes not only her short stories and novellas, but her personal letters, as well. I find her voice so unique and perceptive; ridiculous and tragic, yet reassuring at the same time. It's hard to believe she wrote all this stuff in her 20's and 30's. How sad she passed so young (39).

Film: Yeah, I know it isn't like the book. I know Ken Kesey hated it. I still love "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest." You laugh and then it punches you in the gut...over and over again. In the end, your left with the realization that the will to live is more important than being alive. Sounds like a pretty good desert island credo to me.

Complete Series: This is really rough because I don't watch television anymore, and the old shows that I like haven't aged well. If forced to choose (which I guess I am) I would choose the complete volume of "SCTV Network 90" DVDs. Nothing shaped my thinking as much as SCTV. I still remember a lot of those sketches, even the more esoteric ones (the offensively Japanese tv host interviewing a Godzilla-like creature, begging not to be crushed every time the creature moves--I love that shit!) If I could sneak something else into my backpack it would be "Mr. Show: The Complete Series", but that would be cheating.

This seems like a good Friday entry for Don't Floss. Yep.
