Comments:
I haven't listened to all the tracks yet. In fact I've got to head out for a bit this morning so I just clicked on Such Great Heights because I liked the band's name and wanted to sample their sound. Dude, I'm blown away! How come I've never heard of these guys before? Is all their stuff this good?

Heh... I'm an idiot for even suggesting another project but it occurs to me that the shitheads here should do an online radio station. With our all-over-the-map musical tastes we'd be like a low budget KCRW.

To be honest, I'm just starting to get into The Postal Service. Maybe Madame can elaborate, but my understanding is that it's actually a combination of indie bands (Death Cab for Cutie I know for sure). I sure hope they keep going because I really like what I've heard so far.

I'm a relentless "Sampler"--I love cruising blogs for mp3s in the hopes of finding good new stuff. This 'mix' is my lame attempt to collate some of my search results, with some cool old stuff thrown in for variety. As a result, I keep my music collection large with very few discs to show for it. Of course, with iPods, I guess you don't need CDs anymore.

I wanted to give the radio station its own comment. I've always wanted to try doing this. I can't tell you the number of times I've looked at Live365's radio packages! The cheapest package ($9.95/mth) allows you to store, by my estimation, between 30-40 songs at a time. That's only 2-3 hours of music! The $14.95 option allows slightly better storage capacity, but more importantly, a live relay from your computer. If I had a reliable Internet connection, I might try this option.

In short; I would love to do something like this. As with everything, it comes down to time. For this, I would find the time. It strikes me as a very fun hobby. With Team Shithead's musical proclivities on display, it could be a very interesting station.

Maybe you guys have heard of better, cheaper options for online radio providers?

Personally I'd go with a Shoutcast (actually Icecast because it's open source and GPL'd) solution but it would require a stable dedicated internet connection and spare computer (nothing special, any old Pentium III or IV would do). That's probably the cheapest way to go I'd think. Provide a low-bitrate free stream (56K) and a listener supported higher bitrate (128K) stream. If your listeners grow, or your ISP complains, you can move to a more professional setup. Yearly costs then would be about $600 which should be easy to raise just among the Shitheads.

There is one troublesome thing on the horizon, and damn Feinstein for introducing it, but a new proposed legislation could mean the end to MP3 streaming.

Thanks for the suggestions. I also looked into the PirateRadio stuff, which was interesting.

I guess Feinstein is courting the entertainment industry vote or something. It doesn't matter what technology they introduce, someone will find a way to hack it. They're better off embracing and regulating this type of thing instead of trying to abolish it.

Want to know some horrifying truth? I don't know much about indie music.
No, really.
We don't get the good indie station up here, it cuts out RIGHT before Kelso(KNRK). All we get is 101.1, KUFO, which is seriously in love with AC/DC and Zepellin. I seriously hadn't heard more than 2 Zep songs before I moved here and started listening to them.

Is it too late to comment on this? I'd pledge some dough, and some music to a radio station project. Sounds like fun.

Madame - I feel your pain. I'm still shaking out the cobwebs of 18+ years of classic rock.

Montag - Why, it's never too late to comment! I'm going to check out some different alternatives for radio formats and see which one is:
a) most cost effective
b) easiest
c) the best fit for my existing computer setup.

When I get that shit finished I'll report back.

Anybody else interested? Madame? I'm assuming you would be, tng, since you started all this madness ;)
