Wrong on so many levels

Apparently The Powers That Be have declared that Revenge of the Nerds shall be remade. Here's the Reuters article:

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Kyle Newman has signed on to direct "Revenge of the Nerds," a remake of the seminal 1984 teen comedy.

The project is being developed by Fox Atomic, the new young-adult genre division of Fox Filmed Entertainment. The studio is eyeing a summer start date.

The film reteams Newman with scribe Adam F. Goldberg, who is rewriting the latest "Nerds" incarnation.

The pair worked together on Newman's upcoming "Fanboys," which will be distributed by the Weinstein Co. Newman also penned the animated children's comedy "Gnomes."

You know, at the risk of sounding all sappy, this is really shitty news. Seriously. Of course the original was crude and offensive (hello, can you say stereotype for Lamar and Takaski?), but it was also incredibly sweet...in a twisted way. That's what so many of the 80's "sex" comedies had that recent comedies lack. It's also why "40 Year Old Virgin" did so well--it had that sweetness. I would really hate to see a cynical "modern" treatment of such a good-hearted movie.

Is nothing sacred?
Well, okay, I already know the answer to that, but dear god in heaven, wasn't the fact that a John Waters movie not only made it to Broadway, but is also being re-made as a movie a big enough sign of the apocalypse for people!

j.r. -- That's exactly what I was thinking. I love those 80s comedies. Just like with The Prisoner, this is a property that does not need to be modernized.

madame -- I have a theory that if we can get John Waters within 6 feet of Dubya that Dubya would go Kaboom! as his fanatically rigid view of the world just explodes under the strain of having to deal with a successful, openly gay man.
