The Hoff ain't got nothin' on these guys!

I guess it was pretty common practice in the 50's and 60's for American performers to do German versions of their songs. I found this thanks to a great site, The Orange Cornflake Zoo. Some recognizable Americans doing German versions of their songs. Some versions are pretty good (I guess it's impossible for Roy Orbison or Marvin Gaye to sound bad in any language). Others versions...not so much (It's Pat Boone...you do the math).

When does Seagal do his German album?

Willie Nelson singing in German. Now I've heard everything. What an odd cultural artifact. I wonder why the German market was targeted in this way. Did they also get the recording artists to record albums in Spanish or Italian or Portuguese or Japanese? I mean, they're all huge markets. In fact, I'd think the Spanish speaking market alone would be much larger than the German speaking market. In fact, this makes me wonder if this album and others like it weren't part of one of those weird U.S. government propaganda campaigns to export American culture (to instill democratic ideals don't you know) to post-war Germany. Or I could just be way overthinking this.

I think you might be onto something (or "on" something, I'm not sure which). I know that Werner Herzog, one of my favorite film makers, made all his early films in both German and English. I always thought that was weird, if not completely unnecessary.
