"Sleep with me, I'm not too young."

I'm fascinated by the whole issue of "Backmasking". Whether or not it actually makes people do crazy shit, like put shotguns into their mouths and pull the trigger or eat fiber until their colons explode (okay, I made that one up), is secondary to the fun of trying to decipher the secret messages.

I pulled this from my archives, where it was forgotten until I saw something WFMU did the other day. Maybe you've seen it; there are several examples of backmasking in rock songs located on Jeff Milner's website. To be honest, I have trouble hearing some of what is supposedly being said. But like the entire backmasking phenomenon; the fun is in spinning the myth, not proving it.

Comments:
I once reversed Stairway to Heaven right after the line "there's still time to change the road you're on." Backwards you hear "here's to my sweet satan," and I'm pretty sure it's Robert Plant's voice.

But, all the times I listened to that song frontwards when I was in high school, it never turned me evil... or gay.

Go figure.

What? You mean you're not evil?

Okay, the whole backwards sound is really creepy. Though, even with the words in front of me, I'm still thinking "somebody has a little too much time on their hands. And waaaaay too much imagination."

Styx deliberately put backwards messages on Kilroy Was Here and even Satan couldn't stop that album from sucking. He did however get Dennis DeYoung a lucrative career in show tunes.

tng - What were the Styx messages? Something like, "Jazz Hands!" over and over again?

I really need to figure out all the stuff in the Type-O-Negative songs. They do a lot of backmasking.

Well, back in 1981 Styx was one of many bands targeted by Congressman "B-52" Bob Dornan, Tipper Gore and the PMRC and the California State Legislature. There were supposedly backwards messages on the song Snowblind off Paradise Theater (about James Young's cocaine addiction, although I heard all the members of the band were addicted to coke at the time) that said "Satan move through our voices". There weren't and (according to the story) DeYoung, Young and the Panozzo brothers being the good Catholic boys they were (yeah, right!) were pissed. So on Kilroy Was Here, at the start of Heavy Metal Poisoning they put in backwards "Annuit Coeptis. Novus ordo seclorum." That's of course the Latin phrases around the pyramid on the back of the dollar bill ("God has favored our undertakings. A new order for the ages.").

Thank, tng! I wasn't aware they were a PMRC target. That gets them some bonus points in my book.
