J-Pop Sunday

Hey gang, remember The Blue Hearts, the curiously upbeat punks from a few weeks back? This week we've got The High-Lows, the band that vocalist Hiroto Koumoto and guitarist Masatoshi Mashima went on to form after The Blue Hearts broke up. It's still that great 1950s influenced upbeat punk sound, and the energy and enthusiasm these guys put into their tunes still makes me smile (even if Hiroto's tongue seems to have a mind of its' own).

As a bonus, I've thrown in a tune with Masatoshi out in front. Sorry, I don't know what band he's playing with in that one. Also, there's the first opening theme from the wildly popular Detective Conan anime performed by The High-Lows.

Set List: Thunder Road, Sin and Punishment, Seishun, Soto Dena, Mon-shiro-tyou (Cabbage Butterfly!), Andalusia ni Akogarete (featuring Masatoshi Mashima on lead vocals), Mune no Doki Doki (Detective Conan 1st Opening Theme).

All look to be working. That second song, "Sin and Punishment" is pretty funny, particularly the subtitles.

Ah, that's the one where Hiroto gets the best workout of his tongue too. I swear he's had that thing in training. Can you imagine a tongue-off between Mick Jagger and Hiroto Koumoto? Jagger's got the edge in length, but Hiroto's younger and more agile. Jagger's tongue just sort of lolls around but Koumoto's tongue is always on the move. It'd be a close match, but I think Hiroto would come out on top.
