Sunday in the Mix v15.0

Compared to last week's surf extravaganza, this week's Mix is a little wacky.

A fun song to begin from Sparks. This song might just as well be titled "Requiem For Yuppie Scum" or Metrosexuals or whatever the hell they call soulless businessmen nowadays. Next comes "2am" from one of my favorite recent albums, by the band Thee More Shallow. Perhaps the best song ever about noisy neighbors.

When the CD by The Plastic Constellations came out in January, I sort of dismissed it. I don't know why; it just didn't tickle my fancy. What a mistake! It's a really good CD. Mates of State delivers about the catchiest pop diddy I've heard in a long time. If I'm not mistaken, this song is being used in the trailer for Sophia Coppola's upcoming film, Marie Antoinette. Not sure I have much interest in the film, but I dig the song.

Then we switch gears completely for the next three songs. The first is an awesome dance track by DjD. Prepare to throw yourself around the room! Next comes a...wait for it...country song! Nooooo! Well, I think you'd call Bonnie "Prince" Billy an 'alternative country' artist, but still. This album comes out in September, so be on the lookout for it--it's really beautiful, especially the exquisite harmonies. And don't worry; unless Toby Keith grows a few more brain cells, don't expect to find any real country songs in the Mix (unless they're really old!). Talk about the sounds of your childhood--the next track consists of various musical cues from the Bugs Bunny cartoons of the 40's and 50's by Carl Stalling. Just soak in the memories while listening to it! I tried to connect the particular cues to the cartoons and was startled by how many I still remembered. Quite a statement about the quality of the songs, I think.

The long track this week isn't so long, and it definitely isn't new. It's a reissue of the classic This Heat live album from the late 70's! Wow, do I love this album. Interesting stuff, even by today's standards. Next comes a weird little number by Mclusky that's good for a laugh and a head-bang. The classic selection this week comes from another reissue, this time by Coke Escovedo. Holy shit, is the album "Coke" awesome! I recommend tracking it down if you like the soulful jazz thing.

Sorry I don't provide Amazon links for the albums, but I can't get the URL to copy and paste properly for some reason. It's very frustrating, and this is already hard enough without adding more frustration. Also, I'm adding *Rapidshare links for each song rather than the entire bundle. That way, you can snag what you like, and I get 10X the premium points. Whee!

Mix time: 46:53

2. Thee More Shallows - "2am" (RS)

* Sorry that I zipped everything (even the mp3s alone). Not sure why I did that. Just a brain fart, I guess.

Comments:
OK, out of this week's selection I really liked tracks 2 through 4, but all around a really good selection (though I can do without any hip hop, or whatever you kids are calling the Dj D tune).
