Do you miss MST3K?

Well of course you do! Who doesn't? While the show lost steam after years of writer/actor defections and its 12 television network changes, it was still funny throughout its entire 50 year reign of terror. Now, one of the creators, Michael J. Nelson (who played "Mike" for 35 years on the original MST3K), has started a website to carry on the tradition.

Riff Trax offers you the opportunity to buy commentary tracks for such cinematic turds as Road House, Star Trek V, and The Fifth Element. I think it's something like $2. You download the track and sync it up to a DVD of the movie. Sounds pretty simple, if not a little strange.

Here's a sample from Road House. The problem, obviously, is that Road House needs no commentary to make it more ridiculous. It's perfect, much like a well-brewed fart or a zit that's ready to pop. Still, it's good to hear Mike's take on things.

I'm not sure if I will actually spend money on these things, but I appreciate the effort and the sentiment that went into making them. I suppose you could read this as a cynical attempt to milk the MST3K phenomenon for more money. I choose to view it as a continuation of one of the purest, most elegant ideas ever brought to television. Damn, that was a good show.

Comments:
That was a great show. One that could make me laugh so hard tears would come to my eyes. Even when watching alone.

I friend and I were talking about MST the other day and together we decided it is 'time' to do something like that for days of Thunder. But I see there is no Rifftrax available for it yet. Alas.

Top Gun however is one of the choices in the survey he has posted there...

PS: all the Top Gun commentary you really need is in Quenten Tarrantino's "Top Gun Speech" toward the end of Sleep With Me.

A movie with several memorable moments, but not a memorable movie. I needed IMDb to even remember the title.
