Sunday in the Mix v19.0
There is only one Bond composer. John Barry's lush scores were sometimes too good for the films they framed. In fact, some of the best Barry scores accompanied the worst (IMO) Bond films!
To assemble a list of 10 songs, I needed a few ground rules:
- No title songs (okay, I cheated a little bit)
- Only Barry-scored films (duh!)
- Only original releases (None of this remastered, best of, ultimate edition crap!)
- I have to own the damn soundtrack (To my complete surprise, I own neither A View To A Kill or The Living Daylights!)
In the spirit of these rules, I think I've assembled an interesting list that covers the entire Barry/Bond catalog. I am terribly disappointed to exclude The Living Daylights. I feel Barry did some of his best work on this film, with many elements bleeding over into his masterpiece, Dances With Wolves, which followed only a few years later. Shame on me!
From the beginning, From Russia With Love. I cheated by including the theme (without vocal). Also, here is the first and best version of "007". Next comes the instrumental version of Goldfinger. Overall, I'd have to say Goldfinger is one of my least favorite Barry scores for Bond. Weird, huh? Then we have the haunting "Bomb" theme from Thunderball.
I believe the score to You Only Live Twice might very well be Barry's best Bond. That's why it receives the honor of two entries, "The Wedding" and "Capsule In Space." He quickly followed with On Her Majesty's Secret Service (my favorite Bond film, in case you were wondering). You're probably saying, "Hey, where's Louis?!?" Have no fear! Check the Rapidshare File for a few special treats. Connery gets a nice sendoff with the score to Diamonds Are Forever, or, as I like to call it, "Cha-Ching!!!"
Barry had a notoriously short time to compose The Man With The Golden Gun, but still managed to create a catchy-as-hell theme. This was the first Bond movie I ever saw, and it holds a special place in my heart (despite how awful it is). Moonraker is also spoiled with a better score than it deserves. Not represented is Octopussy. While a fine score, it was unable to place in the Top 10. Oh, if only Barry had scored The Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only. What might have been.
