Can you hear me now?

What would Halloween be without a good old fashioned seance? And if you're going to try and contact the dead, you might as well try to get in touch with somebody interesting. After all, who really wants to talk to their Great Aunt Gertrude?

A special Halloween night episode of the Council For Inquiry's Point of Inquiry podcast as Joe Nickell and DJ Grothe conduct CFI's 10th Annual Houdini Seance. They also discuss Harry Houdini's impact on skepticism, the ways he challenged mediums in his day and talk about his experiences as a "magician among the spirits". Also included in this bonus episode is audio from 1936 with the last Houdini seance attended by Bess Houdini at the historic Knickerbocker Hotel in Hollywood. Listen online, download the MP3, or subscribe to the POI podcast [RSS, iTunes].

I haven't listened yet. Do ya think they'll make contact with ol' Harry?

Comments:
Darn! No Houdini.

To be honest, magic bores me to tears, so I don't know much about Houdini as a famous skeptic. He sounds like a very interesting man. I'm sure there are more than a few biographies about him.

It would've been funny if Houdini did appear and then proceed to browbeat the skeptics for disturbing him. :D

I don't get too turned on by stage magic either, but I agree with James Randi that magicians are important allies to skeptics and scientists. To use Penn Jillette's phrase, magicians are professional liars. They have a unique role in investigating extraordinary claims because they can help us see how someone might be faking any results.
