Hey everybody, it's morality time!
So, I was chatting online with a friend earlier, and he mentioned something on another blogger's site that really bothered him. I went to check it out.
My reaction was a little different. He was disturbed, I laughed my ass off.
I have to admit, it is one of the most creative costumes I've seen in years.
My question is this-what, if anything, is wrong with this costume? I'm going to guess that this man has never been molested, and it's probably a safe bet he's not a molester himself, because otherwise, that's just a "warning sign" waiting for a case file to go in.
We actually got in a bit of a tiff over it, because I look at it and see "creative costume", while he sees "laughing at the suffering of millions of children", or something along those lines. He actually asked me "How would you feel if Reade had to suck some guy's dick?" That's nowhere near the actual subject, which is "offensive halloween costumes".
So, I guess what I'm wondering is, am I wrong? Probably, I freely admit to having very bad taste, especially when it comes to humor, but I just don't see anything that bad about it. I'm suddenly reminded of Holden, in Chasing Amy, saying he was "a fan of clergy molestation humor", and again in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, trying to explain comic books and "fictional characters". I feel the sudden urge to do bad pretend sign language. I guess this is a matter more of "what offends you?" than anything else.
But I still think it's funny.
I am having similar issues with sexist humor being found offensive. Today, for instance, I made the argument that the Democratic Party should hire the marketing team from Hooters restaurants to run their campaigns. After all, a team that can convince people a titty bar like Hooters is actually a family restaurant can surely convince people that limp-wristed Dems will be tough on terror. I thought it was funny as hell. Mrs. J.R. ... not so much.
I just find offensive things funny. I try to be aware of people's feelings, but if I find something hysterically funny, I'll usually laugh. With all due respect to molestation victims, that outfit is funny as hell! Would I wear it to a costume party? Fuck no! Would I have a problem laughing about it in front of my friends? Fuck no!
I can see what's offensive about the costume, and it is incredibly insensitive. Still, it's funny as hell.
I am really bad about making fun of things that...well, aren't that funny to most others.
Though, I totally agree on the Hooters thing.
